HBO Now Enters Online Partnership with Cablevision, Apple TV

HBO Now has found its first cable partnership in Cablevision. It was announced on Monday that CVC will be the first to make HBO’s new streaming service available.

HBO Now was announced in October as a standalone streaming service, in addition to the already available HBO GO which was provided to all satellite and cable subscribers. But for HBO Now, users are not going to need a cable package. How is this a good move for the TV viewing audiences? HBO is on trend with the viewing habits of the younger audiences, that prefer to watch shows online and through other streaming services like Netflix.

Richard Plepler, CEO of HBO found that around 80 million households still did not have HBO. 30 million subscribers had it through satellite and cable only. So a partnership with Cablevision seemed like a suitable next step. Recognizing it as an able internet services providing company in New York, it was chosen to provide HBO Now.

Although last week’s Apple press conference had announced that HBO Now would be available exclusively on Apple TV, it seems quite a bit has changed in the week. Cablevision will allow HBO users to stream shows as they air, even without a cable or satellite pay program.

HBO Now will launch in April alongside the season premiere of Game of Thrones.
